CAPIZ — A powerful and moving spiritual experience is set to unfold today, April 1, as the much-anticipated Pasyon ni Kristo 2026 returns with the theme “Paghigugma kag Pagsakripisyo” (Love and Sacrifice).
The annual reenactment of the Passion of Christ will begin at 12 noon at the President Roxas Civic Center and culminate at the Boac Cemetery.
Now in its 51st year, the event has become a deeply rooted Holy Week tradition in the municipality, drawing participants and spectators from various communities.
Vicente Descalzo, director-consultant of the Pasyon, said the reenactment aims to convey the profound message of Jesus Christ’s love and ultimate sacrifice for humanity.
“This powerful reenactment seeks to bring people closer to the meaning of Christ’s suffering and sacrifice,” Descalzo said in a local radio interview.
Participants—including local performers, church groups, and residents—will portray key moments leading to the crucifixion as the procession winds through the town’s streets. The activity serves not only as a religious observance but also as a form of visual catechesis, particularly for the youth.
“The Pasyon helps younger generations better understand the life of Jesus and the significance of His teachings,” Descalzo added.
The highlight of the event will take place at Boac Cemetery, where a dramatic depiction of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection will be staged—an evocative presentation intended to inspire reflection and deepen faith.
Organizers are expecting a larger turnout this year and are encouraging residents to take part in the reenactment as an expression of devotion and unity.
“Audiences are invited not just to witness but to engage in this transformative story,” Descalzo said. “We hope this experience will inspire reflection and reaffirm faith in Christ’s teachings.”
The Pasyon ni Kristo tradition in President Roxas traces its roots to 1975, when it was initiated by director Dan B. Alcantara. Alfredo Sinson portrayed the first Christ figure in the inaugural staging. The event is supported by the faithful of the San Jose Obrero Parish.
Primarily transmitted through oral tradition, the Pasyon continues to be passed on by elders and experienced performers. Rehearsals also serve as a communal learning space where new participants develop skills in acting and stagecraft while preserving the town’s cultural and religious heritage.
