BREAKTHROUGH IN GLOBAL HEALTH INNOVATION: New antibiotic discovery from University of San Agustin secures Philippine patent

A SIGNIFICANT milestone in Philippine scientific research has been achieved as the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) officially granted a fourth patent for the groundbreaking antibiotic discovery by researchers from the University of San Agustin.

The patented invention, titled “Isolated Streptomyces griseorubens and Antibiotic Anthracycline Shunt Metabolites Therefrom,” represents a major advancement in the global fight against infectious diseases, particularly amid the growing threat of antibiotic resistance worldwide.

Breakthrough in Antibiotic Research

The discovery centers on a microbial strain, Streptomyces griseorubens, capable of producing anthracycline compounds – bioactive molecules widely recognized for their strong antibiotic and anticancer properties. Through isolation and characterization of these compounds, the research team has opened new possibilities for developing next-generation drugs that may help address drug-resistant bacterial infections.

At a time when antimicrobial resistance is considered one of the most urgent global health threats, this innovation positions Filipino scientific research as a meaningful contributor to global healthcare solutions. This innovation became possible because of the Tuklas Lunas Development Center grant from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.

Patent Protection and Recognition

The patent was officially granted on February 6, 2026, and will remain valid until April 15, 2041. This grants the inventors exclusive rights over the production, use, and commercialization of the invention, securing its intellectual property protection and future development potential.

The successful patent registration was facilitated through the University of San Agustin – Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) and the expertise support of TechMatch Asia Inc., ensuring proper protection and recognition of the invention’s intellectual property rights.

This milestone is spearheaded under the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and implemented at the Center for Natural Drug Discovery and Development (CND3) and Center for Chemical Biology and Biotechnology (C2B2), reflecting the university’s strong commitment to advancing high-impact scientific discovery.

This achievement is led by a team of distinguished researchers: Dr. Jonel P. Saludes (director, CND3), Dr. Doralyn S. Dalisay (director, C2B2), Ms. Angelica Faith L. Suarez (CND3), Ms. Melissa June V. Paderog (C2B2), and Ms. Edna M. Sabido (C2B2).
