ILOILO — Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr. has expressed gratitude to the Israeli government for ensuring the safety of Ilonggo overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Israel amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, while reaffirming the province’s continued monitoring of its migrant workers abroad.
The governor made the statement following a courtesy visit by Dana Kursh, Ambassador of Israel to the Philippines, at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol on April 30. She was accompanied by Consul Moti Cohen and MASHAV Officer Richelle Maulion.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the current situation of OFWs in Israel, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Defensor emphasized that the Iloilo provincial government continues to closely monitor Ilonggo workers abroad through its Public Employment Service Office (PESO).
Based on PESO data, more than 100 Ilonggo OFWs are currently working in Israel, primarily as caregivers, helpers, and in related jobs.
Beyond labor concerns, the discussions also focused on strengthening cultural and economic ties, particularly in technology-driven sectors. Defensor highlighted Iloilo’s interest in attracting foreign investments in drone development and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance disaster response capabilities and improve the province’s investment climate.
Ambassador Kursh, for her part, committed to linking Iloilo with potential Israeli investors in these sectors.
The governor also presented the province’s flagship housing initiative, the “Purok Resilience” Program, a localized and climate-responsive socialized housing project aimed at relocating residents living in hazard-prone areas.
Implemented through Executive Order No. 333 issued in July 2022, the program provides housing and resettlement sites for qualified beneficiaries under Republic Act 7279 or the Urban Development and Housing Act of 1992. It includes the establishment of designated resettlement areas in barangays for families exposed to natural and environmental hazards.
On a personal note, Defensor shared his long-standing admiration for Israel, describing it as his “idol country” and recalling his interest in its history since his student days./PN
