ILOILO – Provincial Health Office (PHO) chief Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado urged each barangay to hold “people power do-day kontra dengue” at least once each week.
By doing so weekly, mosquito eggs and larva have no chance of growing into adult mosquitoes, she said.
It takes eight days for a mosquito egg to become a larva.
“During this stage, they are very vulnerable because they are in the water. Once maglupad na sila, budlay na dakpon,” she added.
Aedes egypti and aedes albopictus mosquitoes spread the dengue virus. They breed in clear, stagnant water.
The life span of adult mosquitoes is 20 to 28 days.
As of Sept. 17, the Department of Health recorded 8,114 dengue cases (with 16 deaths) in this province.
But the Aedes mosquitoes also spread the Zika virus. The province already has one case – a 55-year-old female from the municipality of Oton.
Whether it is Zika or dengue, there is a need to intensify vector control and every household has a role to play, stressed Trabado.
Dengue and Zika have similar symptoms but dengue is fatal.
“Kun mahimo lang sa tanan ang search and destroy (mosquito breeding places) ma amat-amat gid nubo ang kadamuon sang lamok,” said Trabado.
DOH has been recommending the following: search and destroy mosquito breeding places; self-protection measures like using insect repellants and mosquito nets especially at day time; seek early consultation for skin rashes and fever, joint pain or red eyes; and say “yes” to fogging when there is an impending outbreak.”/PN
