BORACAY – Materials used in making explosives were found floating off the shore of this island resort, police said.
Forty-nine blasting caps and assorted time-blasting fuses of various sizes contained in a plastic pail, and two gallons of powdered ammonium nitrate were recovered in Sitio Balinghai, Barangay Yapak.
The Boracay Tourist Assistance Center (BTAC) headed by Senior Inspector Jess Baylon informed the explosives and ordnance disposal team of the Task Force Boracay-Philippine Army about the recovery.
“According to the Philippine Army, the recovered materials were components of an explosive,” Baylon said in a radio interview.
Baylon said they were investigating two possible instances where the materials may be used: dynamite fishing or bombing.
All the items, found around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, were taken into custody by the Philippine Army, Baylon said.
While the authorities did not arrest or hold anyone for questioning, Baylon said they are carrying out stricter security measures in the island coordination with the Army and the Philippine Coast Guard.
“Security in mainland Malay will be more stringent, too,” he said.
A blasting cap is a small sensitive primary explosive device generally used to detonate a larger, more powerful and less sensitive secondary explosive such as TNT or dynamite.
Homemade explosives comprising blasting caps and ammonium nitrate, generally used in mining or construction, have been used in dynamite fishing and terroristic activities. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
