MANILA – Sen. Leila de Lima wants the Senate to investigate the displacement of indigenous peoples (IP) from their ancestral lands.
Her probe seeks to address the root causes of displacement in IP communities, especially in Mindanao.
A 2015 United Nations Commission on Human Rights report said over 407,000 IPs in Mindanao have been forced to vacate their lands due to militarization, mining operations, and other vested interests.
“More than investigating who are responsible for this displacement, we have to look deeper into the root causes and other existing policies of the government, so that the IPs may go back to their ancestral lands and live normal lives,” said de Lima as she filed Senate Resolution No. 195.
Seeking for a review in the implementation of Republic Act 8137, or the Indigenous People’s Rights Act, the senator inquired why the mandatory representation of IPs in the local government units has not been strictly implemented.
De Lima said the investigation will provide legislative remedial measures aimed at preventing further displacement among indigenous groups./PN
