BEIJING – President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte on Wednesday assured that the government is prepared for the arrival of super typhoon “Lawin”.
“We are ready for everything,” Duterte said in a speech in Beijing, China, where he is currently in the midst of a state visit.
“Everything has been deployed. All that is needed is to wait it out and wait for the proper advice from government.”
Duterte urged people to follow authorities to minimize damage from the super typhoon.
“Lawin” (international name “Haima”) was declared a super typhoon by the US Naval Observatory’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center on Tuesday night.
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) has placed four provinces under storm signal No. 5.
“Lawin” is forecast to make landfall in Cagayan or Isabela around 11 p.m. on Wednesday at the earliest. It is expected to cross through Cagayan, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte before exiting Luzon on Thursday afternoon.
Most of Northern and Central Luzon is warned to brace for heavy rains late Wednesday through Thursday.
Pagasa warned of possible storm surges of 5 meters along coastal areas of Cagayan, Ilocos Norte and Isabela.
The Japan Meteorological Agency, meanwhile, has classified “Lawin” as violent typhoon, the highest among its intensity classifications.
The UK Meteorological Office said that aside from damaging winds, a further 300 to 500 mm of rain is expected from the typhoon, which means flooding and mudslides are likely. (GMA News)
