MANILA – The Ateneo Blue Eagles captured the men’s crown for the third straight year, while the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons reclaimed the women’s tiara in the UAAP Season 79 swimming competition on Tuesday at the Rizal Memorial Swimming Pool.
Led by Season MVP Aldo Batungbacal, the Blue Eagles reasserted its mastery in the men’s division as it collected 603 points in the four-day meet to capture its fourth UAAP men’s swimming championship overall.
Batungbacal was impressive in the final day for the Blue Eagles as he bagged the 1,500-meter freestyle (16:42.21) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:22.95) in record fashion.
Rio de Janeiro Summer Games Olympian Jessie Khing Lacuna also captured five gold medals, including the men’s 200-meter freestyle (2:09.04) and men’s 100-meter butterfly (56.29).
The Lady Maroons, meanwhile, needed a strong last day showing to regain the women’s championship, its 15th overall, beating the dethroned champion Ateneo Lady Eagles.
Relying on the solid effort of its breaststrokers led by Pricila Aquino, the Lady Maroons came from behind to finish with 444 points, defeating the Lady Eagles, which settled for second place with a 411 tally./PN
