MANILA – The De La Salle University Lady Spikers punched a ticket to the 2016 University Games women’s volleyball quarterfinals with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-9 win over the University of Mindanao-Tagum on Thursday night at the Foundation University Gym in Dumaguete City.
Led by Kim Dy, Ernestine Tiamzon and Ilongga Aduke Ogunsaya, the Lady Spikers finished the elimination round with a 4-0 win-loss slate to advance to the quarters.
From a tight start, the Lady Spikers pulled up to a 16-11 lead on hits by Dy and Ogunsaya. It later grew to 23-13 behind Desiree Cheng and Dy before the Lady Spikers clinched the set courtesy of errors by UM-T.
Trailing early in the second set, the Lady Spikers tied the score at 9-all before surging to a 17-15 lead on a Mary Joy Baron hit. The UM-T took the lead anew at 18-17 but the Lady Spikers answered with a run behind Tiamzon and Ogunsaya to take the set.
Errors by UM-T followed by attacks by Tiamzon gave the Lady Spikers a 11-4 lead in the third set. Hits by Cheng, Dy and Norielle Ipac widened the gap to 22-9 before completing the straight set win on an ace by Alyssa Layug.
Earlier in the day, the Lady Spikers registered its third win by sweeping the Rizal Technological University Lady Thunders, 25-13, 25-12, 25-18, behind the impressive plays of Gyra Barroga.
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses also swept its four Pool C matches following a 25-21, 25-13, 25-22 domination over the University of the East Lady Warriors.
The Golden Tigresses will face the Adamson University Lady Falcons, which scored a 25-17, 25-23, 21-25, 25-16 win over the University of San Carlos, in the quarterfinals round on late Friday./PN
