MANILA – Ceres-La Salle Football Club-Philippines will hope to salvage a third-place finish in the 2016 RHB Singapore Cup when it faces the Balestier Khalsa of Singapore tonight at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
The Bacolod City-based Ceres-La Salle, which recently finished second place in the 2016 United Football League, will shoot for the country’s best finish in the tournament in the game slated at 5 p.m.
The Philippines’ best turnout in the annual tournament is fourth place, accomplished twice by the Global Football Club in 2013 and 2015 and by the Loyola Meralco Sparks Football Club in 2012.
However, Ceres-La Salle will play sans two of its key players in the final match, with Patrick Reichelt out due to a knee injury and Paul Mulders serving a one-game suspension.
Ceres-La Salle had a strong start in the tournament following victories against the Singapore Young Lions (3-1) in the preliminaries and Brunei DPMM (5-0) in the quarterfinals.
However, it suffered back-to-back losses to the Tampines Rovers of Singapore in the two-leg semifinals round, 2-1 in first leg and 3-2 in the second leg, to settle for a third-place battle.
Balestier Khalsa’s campaign also fell short in the semifinals round following twin defeats, both to the tune of 1-0, at the hands of Japan’s Albirex Niigata.
The Philippine-based team Global failed to reach the semifinals round of the tournament after suffering a 5-2 aggregate loss to theTampines Rovers in the round-of-eight eliminations./PN
