DUMAGUETE City – The Negros Oriental acting police director, Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas directed Dumaguete police chief, Superintendent Jovito Atanacio, to solve the thievery that victimized an athletic delegation to the ongoing University Games (UniGames) 2016 in this capital city.
Seven athletes of the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) fell prey to thievery. The burglar fled with at least P30,000 in cash.
The thief broke into the athletes’ apartment at Napoville Building at Claytown in Barangay Daro, Dumaguete City on Oct. 20.
The police were not earlier informed that the athletic delegation of UST had rented an apartment instead as all hotels were already booked for the UniGames.
UST coach Emilio Reyes Jr. of the volleyball team members who were victimized said “the decision of my players to let go of the intruder was the right thing to do, rather than venturing to stop him and be sorry later.”
According to Senior Police Officer 1 Julito Deloria, the suspect gained entry at the back of the apartment by climbing the fence using a plastic chair as ladder.
All the billeting quarters of the UniGames delegations were provided with uniformed personnel, said Atanacio. In fact, the apartment has a blue guard in front.
Sad to say, the fence at the back door where another four-door apartment is located can be scaled even by a small boy because it is not that high, said Atanacio.
According to Atanacio, the caretaker has a suspect that is being pursued by the police. (PNA)
