MANILA – The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons captured the 21st University Games men’s football championship following a 5-1victory over the De La Salle University Green Booters on Saturday at the M. Perdices Coliseum in Dumaguete City.
Kintaro Miyagi led the way with two goals, while Daniel Gadia, Ian Clarino and Jb Borlongan chipped in a goal each for the Maroons, which captured its second UniGames crown.
Both teams had an exchange of misses early in the opening half until the Fighting Maroons surged to a 1-0 lead just before the halftime break on a close range hit by Gadia.
The Maroons continued its dominance early in the second half as Clarino connected a header from a free kick by his brother Miggy Clarino while Miyagi drained his first goal from close range for a 3-0 lead.
The goals continued to pour on for the Maroons in the second half as Borlongan was able to drain one from outside of the box followed by another inside hit by Miyagi to make it 5-0.
The Green Booters finally broke into the scoring column in the 80th minute of the match courtesy of Javier Romero-Salas’ shot. No more goals from the Green Booters followed as the Maroons employed a tight defense.
The Maroons, handled by former Philippine Azkals mainstay Anto Gonzales, is using the tournament to build-up for their title defense in the UAAP early next year.
Meanwhile, the College of St. Benilde Blazers was able to salvage a bronze medal finish in the tournament following a dominant win over Silliman University in the battle-for-third match./PN
