ILOILO – Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. was shocked that Republican businessman Donald J. Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States.
“Oh, my God!” he hollered at the capitol. “Sin-o abi magpinsar nga ma-presidente sia?”
The 70-year-old Trump — a real estate developer-turned-reality television star with no government experience — staged an upset victory against the Democrat Hillary Clinton that surprised American institutions.
“Pero indi man ta kasiguro (But we cannot know for sure),” Defensor said. “He might turn out to be a lot better than many of the past presidents.”
Trump garnered 279 electoral votes while Clinton — wife of former US president Bill Clinton and former secretary of State under outgoing President Barack Obama — got 228.
For the governor, Trump is one of a kind.
“Indi ka man kasiling nga waay sia abilidad (We cannot exactly say he is incapable),” said Defensor. “He is a billionaire. He has investments all over the world.”
Trump cornered electoral votes in Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
But Defensor said Trump is also known for badmouthing and cursing.
He refused to comment on perceived similarities between Trump and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte./PN
