SAN JOSE, Antique – Vegetable gardens may soon be a must for all Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries after food and nutrition topics were included in their Family Development Sessions (FDS) in 2017.
The government, through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, plans to provide for the rice subsidy of 4Ps families.
But the beneficiaries must also have a communal or backyard garden as additional source of food, said Social Welfare Officer III Christian Baldonasa.
To capacitate the beneficiary families, the municipal link (ML) from different local government units (LGUs) in the province had undergone orientation on the importance of vegetable gardening at the Antique Youth and Migrant Center on Nov. 10.
Baldonasa, who served as resource speaker, stressed that community garden could be their sustainable source of nutritious food that will help them have healthy children, increased savings and additional income.
“We commend some families who are into vegetable gardening already,” he said. “This (community gardening) will be done by all 4Ps beneficiaries next year.”
During the session the story of Daisy Duran of Bulacan — a garbage collector-turned-millionaire through backyard gardening — was discussed to give the MLs an idea how the project could work well for 4Ps beneficiaries.
To give the families more skills and knowledge, 4Ps hopes to tap agriculturists in their respective towns during the FDS and work with LGUs for the possible provision of seeds, tools and technical expertise. (PIA/PN)
