KALIBO, Aklan – Damage to infrastructure and agriculture that tropical storm “Marce” caused in Aklan cost some P73.952 million.
Around 4,600 people in 12 towns were affected, according to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
Two people died while five were injured in Banga and New Washington, the PDRRMO consolidated report showed.
Overall damage in agriculture reached P69.747 million.
A total of 212 hectares of rice fields in six towns were affected, according to the Office of Provincial Agriculturist.
Of the damage cost, P58,876,400 was recorded in Banga and P7,213,845 in New Washington.
Ibajay recorded P1.084 million worth of damage, while this capital town incurred P1.395 million.
“Marce” also damaged the revetment wall in Barangay Bulwang, Numancia (P4 million) and cottages in the coastal village of Jawili, Tangalan (P55,000).
Sixty-four houses in Balete, Banga, Tangalan, Nabas, New Washington, Lezo, Kalibo, and Batan were damaged, while seven in Kalibo, Balete, Banga, and Tangalan were destroyed.
Five fishers were rescued after their motorboat capsized off Kalibo, while around 100 residents along the shorelines of New Washington and the Aklan River in Kalibo moved to evacuation centers at the height of “Marce.”
Some areas in Ibajay were flooded and rendered temporarily impassable for trucks and buses bound for Barangay Caticlan, Malay.
The state weather bureau Pagasa placed Aklan and the rest of Panay Island and the island province of Guimaras, among other areas, under signal No. 2 at the height of “Marce” on Nov. 25. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
