MANILA – The Alaska Aces finally barged into the win-column of the 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup with a 95-84 win over the GlobalPort Batang Pier on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Trailing by as much as nine points early in the final frame at 78-69, Calvin Abueva drained eight straight points for the Aces, including back-to-back triples, to come to within 78-77.
The Aces finally took back the lead at 79-78 on a basket by Jvee Casio before continuing its run with conversions from Abueva and Chris Exciminiano to build its largest lead at 95-84.
Abueva, who returned from a two-game absence, finished with double-double 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Aces, which snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to a 1-2 win-loss slate.
Casio contributed 15 markers, including three three-pointers, while Vic Manuel returned from a one-game suspension with 10 points for the Aces, which continue to miss the services of injured centers Joachim Thoss and Siverino Baclao.
Terrence Romeo top-scored with 26 points, while Stanley Pringle and Quinahan added 23 and 15 points, respectively, for the Batang Pier, which slid down to a 2-1 win-loss record.
The Batang Pier won its first two games of the season against the cellar-dweller Mahindra Floodbuster and Star Hotshots before falling short at the hand of the Aces./PN
