BACOLOD City – Capitol recognized Donnie “Ahas” Nietes for being a distinguished Filipino boxer from Negros Occidental.
Nietes, who hails from Murcia town, received a certificate of recognition Thursday, Dec. 8 during the Provincial Sports Coordinators Association’s (PSCA) Yearend Conference at the Panaad Park and Stadium.
On Sept. 26, the 34-year-old Negrense defeated former world titleholder Edgar Sosa at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, capturing the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Intercontinental flyweight belt.
Prior to making his flyweight debut, Nietes was the longest-reigning Filipino boxing world champion.
In 2015 he surpassed the record set by boxing “Hall of Famer” Gabriel “Flash” Elorde in 1967.
Nietes was also a WBO and The Ring Magazine light flyweight champion, and a WBO minimum weight champion.
Provincial Sports Coordinator Angel Verdeflor led the awarding rites on behalf of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. PCSA officers led by the president Benson Fernandez attended.
Nietes thanked the provincial government and the governor for the recognition. (PNA)
