ILOILO City – A coconut tree growing by the roadside and the man climbing it fell into a passing taxi in Barangay Trapiche, Oton, Iloilo yesterday.
The man lost consciousness and was taken to the Western Visayas Medical Center.
The senior reporter of Panay News, Glenda Sologastoa, happened to be in that taxi bound for Iloilo City. She, her two children, the SBR Taxi driver and other taxi passengers were unharmed but the taxi’s roof suffered dents.
The man who fell on the taxi was 43-year-old Hermenoso Poliño, a resident of Barangay Trapiche.
“We were from Tigbauan town. While passing Barangay Trapiche, we heard a very loud thud on the taxi’s roof near the windshield. Then we saw a huge coconut tree trunk in front of us,” Sologastoa said.
The taxi driver stopped and went out to check.
“We thought it was just the coconut tree but we were surprised. There was an unconscious man on the ground just in front of the taxi. It dawned on us that he was with that coconut tree trunk that fell on the taxi,” said Sologastoa.
The taxi’s windshield was also damaged.
The incident happened around 9 a.m. According to Oton police station’s Senior Police Officer 2 Argie Salafranoa, the coconut tree fell while Poliño was climbing it.
“Poliño sustained head and body injuries but is otherwise safe,” Salafranoa said./PN
