MANILA – Jaja Santiago has been crowned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2016 Philippine Superliga after helping the Foton Tornadoes capture its second Grand Prix title.
This marks Santiago’s second conference MVP plum this year after being named the Collegiate Conference MVP in the Shakey’s V-League with the National University Lady Bulldogs.
Santiago admits she was surprised to be named MVP in the season-ending conference as she was expecting teammates Ariella Usher and Lindsay Stalzer to bag the honor.
“I did not expect to win the MVP because I was out for few games and my performance was quite low,” Santiago said. “I was expecting either Usher or Stalzer to win the MVP award.”
“Not that I am being humble but I think either Usher or Stalzer deserved the trophy. I saw their sacrifices off and on the court,” added Santiago, the younger sister of Tornadoes’ Dindin Santiago-Manabat.
Aside from the 6-foot-5 Santiago, her Tornadoes teammates Usher and Maika Ortiz also received individual citations as the 2nd Best Spiker and 2nd Best Middle Blocker, respectively.
Tri-Activ Spikers’ import Stephanie Niemer was named the 1st Best Spiker, while Ilonggas Jovelyn Gonzaga and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas were the 1st and 2nd Best Opposite Spikers, respectively.
F2 Logistics Cargo Movers’ Abigail Maraño, Kim Fajardo and Dawn Macandili, meanwhile, were named the 1st Best Middle Blocker, Best Setter and Best Libero, respectively./PN
