KALIBO, Aklan – Celebrating the holidays need not be hazardous to merrymakers.
The Provincial Health Office urged local government units to organize “community fireworks displays” and designate areas for such.
It is a way to prevent injuries caused by firecracker blasts, according to Provincial Health Officer Cornelio Cuachon Jr.
The Department of Health is campaigning against the use of firecrackers.
Its slogan, “Iwas Paputok, Fireworks Display ang Patok! Maki-isa sa Fireworks Display sa Inyong Lugar,” calls for a safe and injury-free holiday celebration.
Filipinos traditionally greet the New Year by making noise using firecrackers, which are believed to drive away evil and bad vibes.
But the use of such often leads to blast injuries, amputations, aggravation of respiratory illnesses, and — worse — deaths.
Ten firecracker blast injuries were recorded in Aklan from December 2015 to January 2016. Less than 20 cases were recorded the year before.
The Health department also recommends the use of alternative noisemaking instruments, including hornpipes, loud music or utensils.
Wounds caused by firecracker blasts should be thoroughly washed with clean water and soap, and the injured must be immediately taken to a hospital or health center, Cuachon said.
All private and government hospitals in Aklan are on “Code White Alert” to ensure prompt response to medical needs brought by the holidays.
The Provincial Health Office reminded the public to stay indoors to avoid inhaling smoke from firecrackers.
Exposure to firecracker smoke and particles is hazardous to the health, especially of those with respiratory conditions. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
