CEBU City – Revelers drinking alcoholic beverage along streets during the 2017 Sinulog grand parade will be arrested, said Mayor Tomas Osmeña.
There will be no street parties either, the mayor stressed.
Osmeña vowed to carry out measures against public disorder during the parade, one of the country’s biggest tourist drawers, on the third Sunday of January.
“I am sorry if I sound very strict, but we have to start this way,” he said.
Osmeña said the presence of drunken people creates public disturbance and a risky situation.
“We cannot have several hundred people running around wild,” he said.
In January this year a stampede was reported at a street party on Gen. Maxilom Avenue a few hours after the grand parade. Injured persons were taken to a nearby private hospital.
No stampede happened a day after, but the police reported unruly revelers amid huge crowds.
Osmeña said he wanted the celebration to finish early. “We are cutting it early, before sundown,” he said. “People are barely partying, finish, over. I hope it would be manageable.” (PNA)
