MANILA – The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is planning to stage some of the Philippine Azkals’ matches in the provinces, possibly including Bacolod City.
PFF president Mariano Araneta said the option was suggested following the low turnout of Azkals fans during the 2016 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup held at the Philippine Sports Stadium in Bocaue, Bulacan.
“One of our options is to bring the Azkals matches to the provinces,” Araneta said. “We really need the fans support every time the Azkals has a home game. Look at Indonesia, when they held their matches there, fans are there.”
“Hopefully, we can bring the Azkals’ future matches (Asian Cup) at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. Another option is Cebu where a stadium is being constructed,” added Araneta.
“But I just want to clarify, the final decision on whether we hold more Azkals games in the provinces will still come from the organization’s Board of Governors,” said the PFF head.
Araneta said that the Philippine Sports Stadium would have been a great venue for Azkals matches but problems with accessibility are barring football fans from watching live in the venue.
“The Philippine Sports Stadium is really a great venue for Azkals matches but we really had a hard time because it is not that accessible to the fans,” said Araneta. “As you can see, we had a low turnout during the Suzuki Cup.”/PN
