MANILA – Veteran center Asi Taulava’s trade request from the NLEX Road Warriors will likely be approved as open negotiations with several teams including the GlobalPort Batang Pier are reportedly underway.
Road Warriors head coach Yeng Guiao said he won’t block the way in case the 2003 PBA MVP awardee wishes to play for another team in the ongoing 2016-2017 Oppo PBA Philippine Cup.
“Ever since and in whatever team I’ve coached in the past, I always respect wishes by players to be traded. My attitude is it’s always healthy for a team to have players or retain players who feel happy and ready to contribute to the effort,” Guiao said.
“If anybody says he feels he’s better off, to me, it’s an honest expression of their feeling. It’s good for both parties. I respect that,” he added. “We’ll try to make it easy for everybody.”
Taulava has reportedly made apparent to Road Warriors management his desire to be traded to another team after seeing his playing time dwindle from the usual 30 plus minutes to 14 under Guiao.
“If he expects his old playing time and his old role, malabo yon. Ever since, I don’t play any player for more than 30 minutes. If that’s the condition that he expects, that’s not viable,” said Guiao.
“My system and style of play have always been up-tempo. If we’re to slow down to wait him to get in the post, I will not compromise my philosophy. It’s that simple,” added the former Rain or Shine Elasto Painters mentor.
The Road Warriors has yet to adjust to the system being installed by Guiao as it currently lags behind in the standings with a 1-5 win-loss record to tie with Mahindra Floodbuster./PN
