ILOILO City – The Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO) aims to earn P77 million this year.
The LEEO oversees the operation of the slaughterhouse and the public markets.
LEEO chief Ariel Castañeda said they can achieve this by:
* increasing collection efficiency
* creating a task force or division to help in collection
* asking the city administrator to help convene the Task Force Hot Meat, which shall go after illegal slaughtering; and
* imposing fines on illegal slaughterers and confiscating meat products that did not undergo proper slaughtering procedures.
In 2016 the LEEO’s target revenue was P75 million and in 2015, P76 million.
Castañeda said the Task Force Hot Meat is set to convene this month.
The task force comprises representatives from the LEEO, City Veterinary Office, City Health Office, Iloilo City Police Office, Business Planning and Licensing Office, and City Administrator’s Office.
Meanwhile, with new boilers that started operating two months ago, the abattoir in Barangay Tacas, Jaro district is expected to gradually recoup its loses, said Castañeda.
The LEEO will pitch the slaughterhouse for an “AA” accreditation by the National Meat Inspection Service before the year ends.
Right now the office is assessing machines and equipment needing preventive maintenance or replacement.
For 11 months since December 2015, the city government lost around P17 million after the abattoir stopped accepting hogs due to malfunctioning boilers.
More hoists will be installed “para magdamo ang sab-itan sang karne,” Castañeda said, adding that they will acquire additional stun guns for hogs “para indi na maalang-alang kon magdamo ang demand.”
Soon the LEEO will also rehabilitate the slaughterhouse’s sewage treatment plant, as recommended by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office, he said.
Facilities at big public markets will also be improved to “keep economic activities dynamic,” said Castañeda./PN
