MANILA – Manny Pacquiao wants to have one of his two fights this year to be held in the Philippines.
Department of Tourism secretary Wanda Teo said the newly crowned World Boxing Organization welterweight champion personally told him in a recent meeting that he plans to have his scheduled November fight here.
“He (Pacquiao) said he wants to fight here in the Philippines (in November),” Teo said in a television interview. “He said he is willing to fight here even if he wastes P2 million.”
If the plan pushes through, this will be the second time Pacquiao is fighting in the Philippines. In 2006 he fought — and defeated via unanimous decision — the Mexican Oscar Larios at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
In another interview, Top Rank Promotions head Bob Arum said the incumbent senator will hold one of his two fights this year outside of the United States but is targeting Australia, England or Mexico.
Pacquiao has been vocal in wanting to fight in the Philippines before he finally retires from boxing. He had said he wants admission to his hometown fight to be free.
“May mga kausap tayong mga tao na makakatulong para dito ganapin iyong next fight ko,” the Filipino ring icon had said. “Maganda siguro iyon para naman mapanood uli tayo ng mga kababayan natin.”
The eight-division world boxing champion added: “Kahit sino naman ang makalaban ko willing ako. Si (Top Rank promoter) Bob Arum na ang bahala diyan. Ang concern ko iyong mga fans palagi.”/PN
