MANILA – GlobalPort Batang Pier’s Terrence Romeo and Phoenix Fuel Masters’ JC Intal will spearhead the Gilas Pilipinas pool that will compete in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Championship in March 2017.
Head coach Chot Reyes also tapped the following PBA veterans: TNT Katropa’s Ranidel de Ocampo, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters’ Gabe Norwood, and Alaska Aces’ Dondon Hontiveros and Joachim Thoss.
Also included in the lineup were Meralco Bolts rookie Jonathan Grey, as well as University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ guards Jett Manuel and UAAP Season 79 mythical team member Andres Desiderio.
Already part of the lineup were rookies Mac Belo, Matthew Wright, Kevin Ferrer, Russel Escoto, Jiovani Jalalon, Arnold Van Opstal, Roger Pogoy, Eduardo Daquioag, Mike Tolomia, Carl Bryan Cruz, Von Pessumal, and Alfonso Gotladera.
“We are allowed to pick one PBA player from each team, plus the 12 Gilas players and the naturalized player,” said Reyes. “From that lineup, we will pick the 12 players that will play in each tournament.”
“There are no hard and fast rules on the composition of the 12,” the returning Gilas mentor added. “It will depend on the kind of the tournament, competition and on the condition of the players.”
The new year is expected to be busy for the national men’s basketball team, which Reyes said will also compete in the FIBA-Asia Championship, Jones Cup, SEA Games, and the 2019 FIBA World Cup qualifier.
“We have to win the 2017 Seaba tournament convincingly since we’re not a shoo-in in the FIBA-Asia Championship,” said the head coach. “So 2017 is a fun year for us. There’s a lot to look forward to.”/PN
