ILOILO City – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here is urging micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to level up and be more competitive as it also lined up major initiatives this 2017 to boost local entrepreneurs.
DTI officer-in-charge regional director for Western Visayas Rebecca M. Rascon said they will be negotiating with malls for the display of DTI-assisted products under the OTOP (One Town, One Product).
“We would like to elevate them from where they are. We will see to it that the best of the best will be displayed there,” she said, adding that there is no showroom in the region where OTOP output can be displayed except at Sarabia Manor Hotel and PhilExport inside Mary Mart Mall.
With this, she encouraged MSMEs to come up with competitive products.
“If you don’t make your products of the right quality, of the right quantity then you will be left behind,” she cited.
Rascon said they are coordinating with the private sector such the Iloilo Economic and Development Foundation (ILED) and the Small and Medium Enterprise Development (SMED) Council in trying to identify products that should be given priority.
“We also get in touch with the private sector to in determining what sectors should be pursued for every province. ILED (Iloilo Economic and Development Foundation) is a strong house of information for that,” she said.
This year, DTI is also bent on pushing for more support to MSMEs through the shared service facilities, which Rascon said pave way for inclusive growth and “mentor me” project that allows small enterprises to thrive.
Rascon then urged the local media to “monitor and document success stories” of local government units and individuals they have assisted. (PNA)
