MANILA – Even though the date of his next fight has yet to be finalized, Filipino boxer Donnie Nietes has begun preparations for his International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title clash against Thai boxer Eaktawan Krungthepthonburi.
In an interview with Panay News, the Murcia, Negros Occidental-native Nietes said he is beginning with light training to be back in shape for his world title clash tentatively scheduled for April.
“Pagkatapos ng bakasyon, nagsimula na ako sa training kaso light lang muna,” Nietes said. “Siguro sa mga third week ng January, magsisimula na akong mag mitts and bagging.”
Nietes added he was informed by ALA Promotions head Michael Aldeguer that the negotiations for the world title fight has yet to begin but he insisted that he is ready to face his Thai foe anywhere.
“Sa ngayon hindi pa settled ‘yung details nung laban, kung kailan at saan ito mangyayari. Pero kung ako lang, handa naman akong lumaban kahit saan,” Nietes said.
The IBF recently mandated Nietes and Krungthepthonburi to face each other after the belt was vacated by Filipino boxer John Riel Casimero, who decided to move up to the much-heavier super flyweight division.
Nietes, who boasts a 39-1-4 win-loss-draw slate, will be aiming for his third world title in as many divisions after previously holding the World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight and light flyweight belts.
If Nietes successfully wins the IBF world title belt, he will become the third Filipino boxer to win world championships in three different divisions after Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire Jr./PN
