CEBU City – People with health problems were encouraged not to attend the long processions during the Sinulog Festival.
Dr. Shelbay Blanco, Health Emergency Management Staff coordinator for the Department of Health (DOH) Region 7, gave this advice especially to those who are hypertensive and diabetic.
“Make sure you are fit if you go with the crowd,” Blanco said. “If you really want to attend these activities, bring your medicines with you.”
The Sinulog Grand Parade will be held on Jan. 15 along a 4-kilometer carousel route.
A drawer of huge numbers of spectators, the event requires participants to walk long distances to reach the parade route and in returning home.
Hypertensive people must have a stable blood pressure before going out to attend activities on early morning or evening, he said.
“Attending midday or afternoon activities will trigger [high] blood pressure. Avoid heat exhaustion,” said the doctor.
On the other hand, those who are diabetic should bring candies in case their blood sugar drops due to exhaustion.
“You use a lot of energy. Bring any sweets with you,” said Blanco.
Pregnant women planning to join crowds must get clearance from their obstetrician or gynecologist first, the Health official said.
“This will help prevent unexpected labor, especially for those who are now in their last trimester,” said Blanco. (PNA)
