MANILA – Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III describes the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as one of the “fastest-growing” agencies in the country.
Pimentel also commended the “laudable” leadership of PEZA director general Charito Plaza, saying it exemplifies integrity and credibility.
“She has pledged to bring in foreign investments and generate jobs in the countryside,” the senator said.
President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Plaza to the Department of Trade and Industry-attached agency in September last year.
With her appointment, the official proposed to make the economic zones the umbrella program for economic development and industrial growth especially in Mindanao.
She was also looking into the revival of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area to create more jobs and encourage foreign investments.
“The region’s unemployed and underemployed would be the final beneficiaries of this,” Plaza said.
PEZA was created to promote investments, extend assistance, register, grant incentives to and facilitate the business operations of investors in export-oriented manufacturing and service facilities inside selected areas throughout the country proclaimed as PEZA Special Economic Zones.
Meanwhile, Pimentel said he plans to review the operation of economic and Freeport zones and determine if charter amendments are necessary./PN
