ILOILO City – A driver of GDR taxi foiled a young man who tried to rob him in Barangay San Pedro, Molo district before dawn yesterday.

Ramon Capindo, 57, sought the help of the Molo police after successfully repelling the lad. Responding cops arrested the suspect minutes after.

The suspect was 18-year-old Samuel Esteban. He was detained at the Molo police station.

According to Capindo, Esteban flagged him down around 1:30 a.m. He opened the door of his taxi and asked the young man where he was going.

Esteban, however, immediately declared a holdup up, pulled out a knife and tried to stab him, said Capindo.

The taxi driver said he managed to dodge the knife then immediately closed his taxi’s door. Esteban, however, tried to open it again, he said.

After he managed to lock the taxi’s door, Capindo said he drove away and proceeded to the Molo police station.

Acting on his complaint, policemen launched a hot pursuit operation and, with the help of Capindo, spotted the suspect with two other young men near the Bureau of Internal Revenue building in Molo.

At the Molo police station, Esteban denied attempting to rob or stab Capindo.

He also insisted he did not belong to any youth gang./PN
