SAN JOSE, Antique – The Iloilo delegation greatly improved on its 425 haul in last year’s iteration of the largest sports event in the region by claiming 229 gold, 132 silver and 92 bronze medals – 453 plums amassed in total – to mount back-to-back overall championships at the end of the 2017 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet on Friday at the Binirayan Sports Complex.

With 137 event championships in the Secondary Level, Iloilo scored 28 more gold medals than last year’s 109 showing. However, in the Elementary Level, Iloilo fell from 100 gold finishes to 92.

Iloilo’s Sta. Clarita International School-enforced Secondary basketball team stunned Capiz, 74-55, on Friday to claim the championship and contribute another gold to their home province’s conquest.  Their Elementary counterparts enjoyed similar success over Capiz during their finale game, with a 51-33 drubbing for the WVRAA crown.

Iloilo also swept the Secondary level volleyball tournament, claiming the title and the right to banner the region to the nationals in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

The rankings of the five competing provinces remain largely unchanged compared to last year, with Aklan coming at a far second place with 208 medals (48 gold, 82 silver, 78 bronze) followed by Capiz with 193 (40 gold, 63 silver, 90 bronze).

Meanwhile, WVRAA host Antique maintained its 140-medal run at fourth place with 34 gold, 41 silver and 65 bronze finishes. Island-province Guimaras remains in last place with 126 (11 gold, 43 silver, 72 bronze).

The champion teams in the WVRAA will be representing the WVRAA in the upcoming 2017 National Larong Pambansa slated from April 23 to 29, also to be hosted by Antique./PN
