ILOILO City – Mayor Rolito Cajilig of Leon, Iloilo accepted the apology of the photographers who conducted a nude photo session in Bucari, the province’s newest tourist destination located in the municipality.
But Cajilig asked Edward Mallada and Steve Quiatchon to also apologize to the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) of Leon, departments of Tourism and Environment, and even to Cong. Arcadio Gorriceta (2nd District, Iloilo) who facilitated the construction of the access road going to Bucari.
The photographers personally apologized to Cajilig at the mayor’s office yesterday around 7:45 a.m. in the presence of four SB members – Charlie Cangreo, Ruben Calicaran, Romeo Cagangpang, and Josephine Marquez.
They were sorry for not asking permission from the local government of Leon and for offending the sensibilities of some people, said Cajilig.
In a fit of rage on Saturday, Cajilig said he was exploring legal options to protect the image of Bucari as a wholesome tourist destination as intended by the local government of Leon and the Tourism department.
The Bucari photos of the naked woman went viral on social media. Cajilig feared it would adversely affect the new tourism destination’s image.
For her part, Tourism regional director Helen Catalbas did not condemn outright the photographers, acknowledging that perceptions on nudity vary.
But she made it clear that no nude photo shoots should take place in Bucari, a public area that her office is packaging as a wholesome tourist spot.
“If that group believed there was nothing wrong with their nude photo sessions, they’re free to do so elsewhere but not in Bucari,” said Catalbas.
A Bucari tourist guide claimed there were tourists at the time the photographers were taking pictures of the naked woman. Some of them were scandalized but others observed the photo shoot and even took pictures of the activity using their mobile phones, he said.
Known as the “little Baguio” of Iloilo, Bucari is a special economic zone for tourism and ecological enterprise due to its cool climate, topography, highland attractions and scenery./PN
