MANILA – The AMA Online Education Titans pulled away late in the game to score an 83-78 win over the Blustar Detergent-Malaysian Dragons in the 2017 PBA D-League Aspirants Cup on Tuesday at the JCSGO Gym in Quezon City.
Trailing 75-69 with just over four minutes left in the game, the Titans went on a huge 12-1 scoring run behind Juan Miguel Tiongson and Ryan Arambulo to take an 81-76 lead.
Tiongson, who previously suited up for the Dragons, led the way with 23 points and seven assists for the Titans, which stretched its winning run to three to improve to a 5-2 win-loss slate.
Arambulo chipped in 20 markers, while Jhon Rey Alabanza contributed a near triple-double 16 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks for the Titans, which survived the absence of rookie Jeron Teng.
The former De La Salle University Green Archers superstar has been loaned by the Titans to Mighty Sports-Philippines, which is currently competing in the 2017 Dubai Invitational Basketball Tournament.
The Dragons seemed headed for a huge upset after building a lead as high as 64-55 at the end of the third frame, but a devastating run by the Titans behind veterans Tiongson, Arambulo and Alabanza turned things around.
“Sabi ko sa mga players, it’s all about our pride and composure. Alam namin na kaya namin silang talunin pero nauna mag-relax kaya nagkaroon ng kumpiyansa ang kalaban,” said Titans head coach Mark Herrera.
Kwaan Yoong Jing top-scored with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Mak Long Seng and Tristan Perez had 15 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Dragons, which slid down to a 0-5 slate./PN
