MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles survived a huge challenge from the University of the East Lady Warriors before scoring a 25-14, 25-21, 25-21 win in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the San Juan Arena.
Michelle Morente led the way with 13 points, on 10 attacks and three service aces, for the Lady Eagles, which tied defending champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers at second place with a 4-1 win-loss slate.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a quick 8-4 start in the game behind Morente and Jhoanna Maraguinot. The Lady Warriors rallied to within 13-all but the Lady Eagles pulled away anew on consecutive hits by Madeleine Madayag for a 1-0 set lead.
Both teams kept it close in the second frame with the Lady Warriors holding on to a slim 19-17 lead but the Lady Eagles leaned on conversions by Maraguinot to steal the second set.
The Lady Warriors continued to challenge the Lady Eagles in the third frame with the former taking the lead several times before the Lady Eagles closed out the match with hits from Morente, Madayag and Kat Tolentino.
“Pinaghandaan talaga namin ang UE kasi kitang kita naman talaga na lumalaban na sila this season kaya we don’t want to be complacent,” said Lady Eagles assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.
In the men’s division, defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles stretched its winning run to five with a 25-17, 25-13, 25-22 domination over the UE Red Warriors behind the 15 points of three-time MVP Marck Espejo.
Adamson University Falcons, meanwhile, scored a stunning 26-24, 24-26, 25-20, 28-26 victory over the DLSU Green Spikers, which suffered a double whammy in the game after losing main man Raymark Woo to a season ending ACL tear injury./PN
