ILOILO – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is employing a system that aids in monitoring threats to biodiversity, including forests and watersheds.
Generally the Landscape and Wildlife Indicators System, or Lawin System, aims to help environmental law enforcers improve protection and conservation strategies, the DENR said.
One of its components is forest monitoring and planning.
Under this the Lawin team identifies conservation areas and hotspots and formulates measurable conservation objectives.
Another is the manual recording and encoding of patrol data through a mobile application.
The other component is improving the monitoring response of community leaders, resource managers and environmental law enforcers so they can evaluate and continuously boost forest conservation strategies.
Meanwhile the DENR facilitated the workshop “Forest and Biodiversity Protection System Data Management and Response” to enhance the Lawin System.
It was held in coordination with the United States Agency for International Development – Biodiversity and Watersheds Improved for Stronger Economy and Ecosystem Resilience.
Features of the Lawin System mobile application were modified and improved to address technical problems that provincial and community environment and natural resources officers encountered.
A significant improvement introduced was the exclusivity of data import and access at the level of the provincial and community environment officers, said Assistant Regional Director for Management Services Livino Duran.
“We must improve the monitoring of forestry laws and enhance our knowledge on the protection of our forests and watersheds against threats to the environment,” Duran said. (PIA/PN)
