SAN JOSE, Antique – The province of Antique has rice buffer stocks of 408,515 bags enough to address the 4,800 bags daily requirement for three months, according to the National Food Authority (NFA).
“The data is based on our Feb. 14, 2017 inventory. We are more than secured. Ang dami ng ating bigas, sobra sa kailangan natin,” said NFA-Antique manager Frisco Canoy.
NFA ensures food security through various activities such as buffer stocking, distribution of the staple food to various marketing outlets, and rice procurement, among others.
“NFA-Antique has attained 90 percent accomplishment of our target of 50,000 bags of rice in 2016, where in more than 44,000 bags were procured from the farmers,” Canoy said.
An additional 5,876 bags of rice have been procured from farmers since January, he added.
Canoy urged farmers to sell good quality rice so they (farmers) could also get additional incentives from NFA.
NFA will also address the lack of drying facilities so that farmers, during the rainy season, could protect their produce.
There are 80 NFA-accredited rice outlets in Antique and they help make government rice affordable and accessible to the consuming public, said Canoy. (PIA-Antique/PN)
