MANILA – The Ateneo Lady Eagles cruised to solo first place in the standings of the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament with a 26-24, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17 win over archrival De La Salle University Lady Spikers on Saturday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Michelle Morente led the way with 25 points, on 20 attacks, three blocks and two service aces, for the Lady Eagles, which will end the first round of eliminations on top with a 6-1 win-loss record.
Rookie Kat Tolentino added 18 markers, on 16 attacks and two blocks, while Isabel de Leon had nine points for the Lady Eagles, which also got 79 excellent sets from Julia Morado.
The Lady Spikers were dominant in the first frame as it built an early lead at 14-9 and later at 24-21 after a Kim Dy hit. But the Lady Eagles rallied behind Morente to steal the set from La Salle.
It was almost the same pace for the Lady Spikers in the second set as it surged to an early lead but a late run by the Lady Eagles courtesy of Morente and Tolentino turned a 23-18 deficit to a 26-24 set win.
After dropping the third set, the Lady Eagles fought back in the fourth for a 15-9 lead. The edge grew further to 20-13 before de Leon fired back-to-back hits to close the match.
“Maganda yung first round na first kami sa standings, pero sana sa second round and semis, aangat pa yung laro ng team,” said Lady Eagles assistant coach Sherwin Meneses.
Dy finished with 14 points, while Mary Joy Baron and Ilongga Aduke Ogunsaya had 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Lady Spikers, which slid down to solo second place with a 5-2 record./PN
