MANILA – As team leader of the “Davao Death Squad” (DDS), retired SPO3 Arturo Lascañas on Monday admitted killing “more or less 300” individuals.
“Sabihin na lang natin na 200 plus. More or less 300,” said Lascañas as he addressed Sen. Grace Poe’s question.
Lascañas revealed he had killed “200” people by 1989, at which time he joined the vigilante group led by then Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Asked to identify his first victim, Lascañas had no direct reply.
“Sino ‘yung unang pinatay niyo?” Poe asked.
He answered, “Hindi ko na po matandaan.”
During Monday’s reopening of the DDS probe, Lascañas claimed that in 1988, Duterte organized the Anti-Crime Task Force to go after criminals.
“It was at this time that mayor Duterte began organizing liquidation squads that later became known as the ‘Davao Death Squad’. In the beginning, we targeted and killed drug addicts, drug pushers, snatchers, hold-uppers, and other criminals,” he said in his affidavit.
“Later on, however, we were ordered by mayor Duterte to go after and kill his personal and political enemies. We became like hired or contract killers who killed not only criminals but innocent people.”/PN
