MANILA – The Ceres-Negros Football Club-Philippines will once again be tested when its faces Singapore’s Tampines Rovers in the 2017 Asian Football Confederation Cup tonight at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
Ceres Negros head coach Risto Vidakovic said they are hoping to draw strength from their Negrense fans as it faces a tall order against the dangerous Tampines squad at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
“Tampines is a former champion of Singapore so it will not be easy to win,” said Vidakovic. “I hope that with the help (of the crowd) and the special motivation that the players have to play at home is very important. A full stadium is very important.”
“But the most important objective is to win the game, get three points, and have another game at home,” he added. “We have to keep this team spirit we have and I think if we play as a team we have bigger chance to win the game.”
Ceres-Negros was forced to a 1-1 draw in their first match in the tournament against TNT Hanoi of Vietnam on an exchange of goals by Bienvenido Marañon and Nguyen Van Quyet.
Meanwhile, the Global Football Club will be gunning for its second win in the group stage when it faces Beoungket Angkor Football Club of Cambodia at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Global, which qualified to the competition after bagging the United Football League (UFL) Cup and League titles last year, opened its campaign with a 1-0 win over Myanmar’s Magwe FC on a conversion by Misagh Bahadoran.
Ceres-Negros is currently at second place in the Group G standings with one point, while the Global is tied with Johor Darul Ta’zim of Malaysia in Group F with three points.
Both Ceres Negros and Global need to top their group for them to advance to the zonal semifinals and play against the Asia zone winner, with the winner moving up to the zonal finals./PN
