KALIBO, Aklan – Two civilians were killed while three police officers were wounded during an investigation into a road crash in Makato town.

A Nissan Urvan passenger van bound for Barangay Caticlan, Malay accidentally hit around 10:30 p.m. on Monday a motorcycle and a truck involved in a crash in Barangay Calangcang.

At the time, the officers were looking into the crash, which happened 30 minutes earlier.

Van driver Ricardo Llanera Palmes, a 61-year-old resident of Calinog, Iloilo, was taken in custody by the Kalibo police station.

“I didn’t know a crash happened and police officers were investigating. The truck and the motorcycle were in the middle of the highway. I thought who I hit were trucking helpers,” he told the Kalibo police in Hiligaynon.

After which, Palmes said he jumped off the van, and hired a motorcycle and headed to this capital town for fear of his safety.

“I thought of going home to Calinog and turn myself in to the police there. But I changed my mind and surrendered here in Kalibo, not in Makato where the victims may have relatives who could get back at me,” he said.

Palmes asked for forgiveness from the victims’ families.

Motorcycle driver Ervin Melanio, a 46-year-old resident of Cabatanga, Makato, had fatal injuries. He was declared dead in a local hospital.

While four officers from Makato police station were investigating the accident site, Palmes failed to stop his van and hit the motorcycle and the truck.

Truck driver Rodulfo Autor, a resident of Bicol who was standing near the officers, was killed. Three officers were injured and taken to hospitals in this capital town, about 12 kilometers east of Makato.

Police Officer 2 Kynch Parce was in critical condition when brought to the Saint Gabriel Medical Center in Barangay Poblacion here. Parce was referred to a hospital in Iloilo for further treatment.

Police Officer 2 Rufino Donato was taken to the Intensive Care Unit of the Panay Health Care Multipurpose Cooperative Hospital in Barangay Estancia here, while Police Officer 2 Niel Serino had minor injuries and considered an outpatient.

Five van passengers — they rented the Nissan Urvan for P3,000 from Iloilo to Caticlan — were unhurt.

Police were still investigating the incident. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
