MANILA – Sen. Antonio “Sonny” Trillanes IV believes the credibility of retired cop Arthur Lascañas’ remains “intact” after he testified at the Senate inquiry into the “Davao Death Squad” (DDS) on Monday.

On March 6, Lascañas, a self-confessed member of the vigilante group, retracted his previous statements denying the existence of the DDS and President Rodrigo Duterte’s involvement in the extrajudicial killings (EJKs).

“He was able to enumerate detailed accounts of murder, EJKs and contract killings masterminded by no less than President Duterte himself and his son, Paolo,” Trillanes on Tuesday said.

Trillanes said Lascañas’ “serious” accusations against them “were never refuted point by point.”

The ex-policeman accused Paolo, the incumbent vice mayor of Davao City, during Monday’s Senate investigation of ordering them to kill a man who once attacked him over a traffic altercation.

Duterte’s son, in 2014, also restrained them from arresting a Taiwanese national allegedly involved in illegal drugs trade, he alleged.

For his part, Paolo described Lascañas’ latest testimony as “made up”, also saying that “desperate” Trillanes only wanted to discredit their family.

“[The senator] is making money in this circle because his political career is already at a dead end,” he furthered.

Trillanes, who earlier revived his accusation that Duterte and his family possessed unexplained wealth, however, said the day of reckoning for the Dutertes is “near.”

“Truth and justice finally caught with them,” the former Navy official said./PN
