ILOILO City – Not a few — including vendors — have complained about how filthy public markets in the city are.
The vendors themselves are to blame for that, stressed Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo.
“Sila man ang balasuhon kay sila mismo wala gapanglimpyo,” he said. “Naga-ugtas ang aton mga market sweepers. They (vendors) don’t have their own virtue of cleanliness.”
Vendors throw their garbage just anywhere, attracting rats and making the markets stink, said the councilor.
“Ang ila association does not function well, pasapar lang,” Peñaredondo said. “Anhon lang sang mga sweepers kag mga officials sa tinda? Tani mabinuligay.”
Vendors pay their rent late, too, the councilor lamented.
“Pirme na sila iya amoroso, buhay magbayad,” he said. “Kada hambal, pigado gid kuno, pero kon kadtuan mo sa ila balay, aysus, maayo ang ila iya pangabuhi diin-diin e!”
Peñaredondo stressed that the rent at public markets is way cheaper than those in private commercial buildings.
Vendors also demanded that the city government use the public markets’ revenue in improving the commercial areas.
“Sa diin? Itudlo nila ang tuig nga nagganar ang merkado. Waay gid natabo nga ang aton syudad nagganar sa aton mga markets,” said Peñaredondo.
Aside from the difficulty in collecting rent from the vendors, the rent itself is very cheap, he stressed.
“Bisan ano mo lang na ka manage kon ang rate mo barato,” said Peñaredondo. “Amo na tawag naton nga losing proposition. Galing kay tungod we would like to serve the public, bisan pierde, sige na lang.”/PN
