KALIBO, Aklan – Ati-Atihan Festival tribes will participate in the Manggahan Festival of the island province of Guimaras.
During the Western Visayas Invitational Cultural Presentation on May 21, the tribes will showcase street-dancing routines and colorful costumes unique to the “mother of all Philippine festivals.”
Kalibo Sto. Niño Ati-Atihan Foundation, Inc. chairman Albert Menez said the tribes tapped to represent the Ati-Atihan were seven-time Tribal Big champion Black Beauty Boys of Barangay Linabuan Norte, Modern Group champion Royal Scorpio of Barangay Poblacion and Tribal Big first runner-up Vikings of Makato town.
At least 80 dancers and drummers covered with black soot will take part in the celebration featuring other festivals in Region 6, Menez said.
The Western Visayas Invitational Cultural Presentation is one of the events leading to the celebration of Guimaras’ 25th anniversary as a province on May 22.
Adding color to the two-week-long celebration is the Manggahan sa Kabanwahanan, which is also celebrated in the Guimaras towns of San Lorenzo (April 8 to 9), Jordan (April 16 to 17), Nueva Valencia (April 23 to 24), Buenavista (April 27 to 30), and Sibunag (May 6 to 7).
Other activities include Imbukada: Opening Salvo (May 11), Tunong Manggahan (May 11), First Moturtle Race (May 12), 3rd Governor Gumarin’s Shoot Fest (May 12 to 13), Truck Fest and 4×4 Offroad Challenge (May 13), CineMangga Film Festival (May 13), Bike Fest: Tour de Guimaras (May 14), CineMangga Sa Plaza (May 14 to 16), Search for Mutya ng Guimaras (May 19), and 6th Mango Man Triathlon and Mango Run (May 20).
Guimaras, also known as the “Mango Capital of the Philippines,” acquired its status as an independent province on May 22, 1992 after 26 years as a sub-province of Iloilo. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
