MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday said a total of 13 drug suspects have been killed during the first five days of implementation of its relaunched campaign against illegal drugs.
The PNP said the 13 drug suspects were killed in 212 operations conducted from March 6 to March 11.
It added that under “Double Barrel Reloaded,” a total of 331 suspects have been arrested.
Under the relaunched Project Tokhang, the PNP said a total of 14 people have surrendered – one pusher and 13 drug users – in 1,345 house visits during the past five days.
Compared to the initial Double Barrel implementation, the data shows a “less bloody” campaign against illegal drugs.
In a report in July last year, the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism said an average of 10 drug suspects were killed by the police during the first two weeks of implementation.
The report said that a total of 135 people were killed by the police in anti-illegal drugs operations from July 1 to 13 and 1,844 others were arrested.
A total of 60,393 alleged drug users and 5,914 alleged drug pushers surrendered while 43,026 houses were visited under Project Tokhang.
After almost a month of suspension, the PNP relaunched its campaign against illegal drugs.
During the launch, PNP chief director general Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa promised a “less bloody” police campaign against illegal drugs.
He announced that only police commanders will now be allowed to conduct “tokhang” operations and they should be accompanied by representatives from the Catholic Church and local government officials, including barangay chairmen.
From July 2016 to January 2017, more than 2,555 drug suspects were killed in police anti-drugs operations.
Nearly twice the number of suspected drug offenders were also killed by suspected vigilante groups during the same period. (GMA News)
