MANILA – The Malacañang on Saturday said the European Union (EU) still cannot seem to comprehend the peace and order situation in the Philippines.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said this in response to European Trade commissioner Cecilia Malstrom’s expression of concern over the passage of the death penalty bill at the House of Rpersentatives.
“Considering anything, hindi naman pwedeng pabayaan ng gobyerno na… ma-delay siya, madiskaril sa kanyang… madiskaril lalo na sa mga threats ‘no,” said Abella in a radio interview.
“Kasi parang threat ‘yan ng mga international communities sa atin eh ‘no? Katulad nung sa EU ‘no, dahil hindi nila siguro maarok, hindi nila maintindihan, hindi nila makuwan talaga kung ano ba talaga ang nangyayari dito,” he added.
On Friday, Malstrom warned that the Philippines could lose billions in trade deals if proposals to revive the death penalty bill and to lower the age of criminal responsibility to nine years old would become laws.
Her statement was on top of the EU’s concerns on extrajudicial killings amid Duterte’s war on drugs since July last year.
Abella, however, pointed out that lawlessness has already been widespread within communities when Duterte took over as president last year.
“Unang-una, kailangan natin maging safe at secure ang ating bayan… Saka ‘pag naandiyan ‘yan, susunod din ang lahat ng ano, itong economic growth na hinahanap natin,” he added.
Sen. Leila de Lima, a staunch critic of the Duterte administration and its controversial war on drugs, has recently been sent to jail on charges of using in her senatorial campaign, money collected from the illegal drug trade inside the national penitentiary. (GMA News)
