A celebration for Mother Earth

“EARTH Day is not just a celebration of the environment. It’s a movement to protect and preserve it,” according to MORE Power.

That seems too good to be true coming from a power distribution utility in an industry that is traditionally not so friendly with the environment i.e. using coal and diesel powered sources of electricity. I suppose if we are talking about the former power distribution utility of “I Am Iloilo City”, the defunct Panay Electric Company, then yes as they sourced their electricity almost exclusively from a coal plant somewhere in La Paz district.

But that is not the case with MORE Electric and Power Corporation. They source their power directly from a geothermal plant in Leyte via MORE Power’s option to purchase supply from the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management (PSALM) and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).

To do this, MORE Power had to install a 69-kilovolt (69-kV) switching station to link to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), which transmits the power purchased from PSALM and WESM.

All these result in MORE Power able to bring down the cost of electricity to just P6.40 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), the cheapest in the Philippines and 100% coming from sustainable sources. The bragging rights are: it is not only cheapest electricity rate but also environment friendly and sustainable.

Indeed, for MORE Power celebrating Earth Day is not just lip service but actually walking the talk.

So on April 22-24 MORE Power celebrated Earth Day with the Earth Weekend Shindig the theme was “Invest in our planet”.  It was a three-day weekend event at Villa Varona, Villa Baybay in Villa Beach filled with fun activities centered on making our planet a better place for future generations.

It opened with the Global Clean-up Day on April 22 to raise awareness on the need to keep our environment cleaner and greener. The events that day included: Sunrise Meditation, Beach Clean-Up, Earth Bazaar, Sand Art Installation, Mural Painting and a cocktail party complete with a live DJ session.

Then this was followed by Break Single Habit Saturday on April 23 because saving the environment starts from making it a habit. The day started with Yoga sessions and ended with a cocktail party with live DJ music.

And the three-day weekend celebrations came to a close with the finale of the event was Act on Climate Change Sunday to encourage everyone to join us in saving the environment. On that final day, there were relay games, more beach clean-ups, Earth Bazaar and Free Market, more sand installation art, mural paintings and to cap the day and event there was a film showing and live acoustic music sessions.

MORE Power’s version of Earth Day celebrations was for me a little bit although not quite like the Malasimbo Music and Art Festival, the Vulan Festival in Baler and the Earth Day Concerts in Quezon City during the ‘90s, but at least it’s a start.

And we segue to a satisfied customer – not just anyone but THE Edgardo Lopez Suelo, artist, designer par excellence bar none.

It is always good business sense to keep the customer satisfied. As they say, “hell hath no fury than a customer scorned” and that’s nothing compared to a slightly inconvenienced Edgardo Lopez Suelo.

Seriously though, just the other day over excellent coffee, lovely pastries and conversation with Edgar after the usual banter on politics, art and life, our talk drifted towards the cost of electricity these days and how fortunate we are in “I Am Iloilo City” that MORE Power is our power distribution utility.

So I asked him pointblank what he can say about MORE Power as compared to the previous power distribution utility.

And this is what Edgar said: “I am very satisfied with MORE Power … from power quality, reliability, billing and payments, communication, customer service and I noticed all the staff are very polite. These factors all have a direct impact on my satisfaction.”

Compared to the previous power distribution utility, this is what Edgar said: “MORE Power is more caring to their customers. Obviously the biggest area I think about their services is power quality and reliability, meaning keeping the lights on. No more over charges, my bill from P14,000 down to P6, 000 equals big savings”.

And that is a truly happy and satisfied customer of MORE Power./PN
