ILOILO City – A police major at the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) was disarmed and restricted.
Police Major Elde Labis, assistant chief of the PRO-6’s Communications and Electronics Unit (RCEU), claimed to have accidentally fired his gun inside his quarters last week.
According to RCEU chief, Police Lieutenant Bryan Gregorio, Labis was disarmed after the incident and an investigation was launched by the Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS).
What was Labis’ claim?
Around 10:30 p.m. on July 7 he allegedly heard a noise. Carrying his .9mm service firearm, he went outside to check.
When he learned that the noise “came from his colleagues”, Labis claimed he went back to his room, placed his gun in the cabinet but it “suddenly went off”.
“Based on his allegation, it was a case of accidental firing,” Gregorio told Panay News, adding that Labis denied he indiscriminately fired his gun.
Labis also said he was willing to be investigated.
Meanwhile, another policeman saw Labis that night.
Police Master Sergeant Benito Espena said he was walking towards the comfort room when he noticed that the door of Labis’ quarters was ajar.
Espena reportedly closed the door but Labis allegedly came out carrying a gun. He then asked Espena why he was outside of his quarters.
Later, Labis went back inside and Espena heard a gun fire.
“We have to wait for the result of the investigation,” Gregorio said./PN
