After ASF reported in Camiguin NegOcc steps up  border control

BY DOMINIQUE GABRIEL G. BAÑAGA

BACOLOD City – The provincial government of Negros Occidental stepped up its anti-African Swine Flu (ASF) border controls after ASF cases were recorded in Camiguin early this week.

Newly-appointed Provincial Veterinary Officer Dr. Placeda Lemana said Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson wants to make sure the province maintains its status as one of the country’s few provinces that are still free from ASF.

The provincial government is protecting the province’s P6-billion swine industry.

Negros Occidental remains the country’s No. 1 in backyard swine raising.

With regards to the poultry supply in the province, Lemana said supplies remain sufficient with the province producing 70,000 to 75,000 heads of chicken per day with a consumption of 60,000 to 70,000 heads per day.

The recent increase in the price of chicken in the market, meanwhile, is blamed on the high cost of feeds./PN
