AKLAN — The Provincial Government of Aklan is targeting Boracay Island to become a cruise hub through a proposed “Cruise and Fly” concept for international cruise ships docking at Caticlan Jetty Port.
In a local radio interview, Niven Maquirang, Executive Assistant to the Office of the Provincial Governor and Officer-in-Charge of Cruise Ship Operations, said the provincial government envisions Caticlan Jetty Port as the future center of cruise operations in the province.
Maquirang said approximately P300 million has been allocated for the Cruise/Sheltered Port project in Barangay Caticlan, Malay. In addition, the Philippine Ports Authority has earmarked another P810 million to support the development.
He added that Governor Joen Miraflores has formed a dedicated team to oversee the project’s implementation. The initiative has also received endorsement from Barangay Caticlan.
The provincial government is currently processing the necessary documents for the project’s implementation.
Maquirang expressed optimism that the development will not only boost tourism but also strengthen the province’s economy by generating additional employment and livelihood opportunities for Aklanons.
The proposed “Cruise and Fly” concept aims to position Boracay as a strategic gateway for international cruise passengers, allowing seamless sea and air connectivity via Caticlan./PN
